A healing and educational environment
The exceptionally preserved nature, the precipitous cliff faces typical of the Slovenian coast, and the rich life in the sea and the land are the features that led to the designation of the area of Debeli rtič as a natural monument in 1991. Unspoilt nature, sea and 2,300 hours of sunshine a year allow health and other programmes to be carried out. The Health Resort park covers approximately 14 hectares with more than 4,500 major plants (trees, shrubs, climbers) of more than 230 species and originating from all continents. Conifers predominate (Mediterranean cypress, black pine, cedar); oleander, laurel and cheesewood shrubs are the most abundant shrubs; and rosemary, lavender, myrtle and berry bushes dominate the smaller shrubs. The park is regularly maintained and restored as part of the sustainable development of the Health Resort. The Health Resort also has a variety of aromatic herbs and honey plants, which attract the visitors in an educational way. The park also has a broader educational role, which includes guided, professional learning about the flora through various educational programmes.

“The first time I went to Debeli rtič I was 10 years old and there were only military camps, a kitchen and an almost ruined villa. In the short summer months, there were a lot of children, so the kitchen, the laundry and us future paediatricians couldn’t keep up with the situation. Thanks to the dedication of the staff, the children had their first encounter with the sea without any major problems. During my many months at the Health Resort, I also encountered serious accidents and illnesses. Many guests have recovered precisely because they were at the Health Resort at the time. All these incidents have helped me to better appreciate the work of the doctors.”

“I spent my winter holidays in 2000 at Debeli rtič, in Pavilion B. We got up at seven in the morning, washed up and then went for breakfast. After breakfast we played on the playground. We swam in the indoor pool. In the morning I liked to read a book or play badminton. We also took a boat ride to the Port of Koper. We would go for walks along the shore and collect shells, but I forgot to bring them home. We also had three dance events. Vili Resnik sang at the in final one and I got his autograph. I made many new friends.”
